Great Apes Can Have A Midlife Crisis Too
A study of great apes in captivity shows that the animals’ sense of well-being bottoms out in middle age, before rebounding in old age. The survey covered four criteria: the animals’ overall mood; how much pleasure they got out of socializing; their success in achieving goals such as obtaining food and objects they desire; and how happy the keeper would be if he or she were that animal for a week.

Wasps Hate Liars!
Wasps have facial markings that show their fighting ability - dominant wasps have more fragmented facial patterns than subordinate wasps. Scientists altered some wasps’ facial patterns with paint, in order to create a mismatch between their appearance and behavior. Goats Pick Up Accents From One Another!
Take kids with different accents, have them hang out together for a few weeks, and suddenly they’re all talking alike, and have picked up each others’ accents! The goats’ ability to modify their calls indicates that they have vocal learning - previously only recognized in some species: like us, “birds, whales, dolphins, bats & elephants.”
Blind Dog Gets Helped Out By His Own Seeing Eye Dog Pal
One day Tanner & Blair started exercising in a play yard together. Blair all of a sudden seemed to realize that Tanner was blind and just started to help him around. After Tanner and Blair established their friendship, Tanner’s seizures decreased considerably. Likewise, Tanner has had a calming influence on Blair, who is now much less anxious and timid.

Beavers Share Food With Muskrats!
Beavers are willing to share their hard earned winter food & shelter with muskrats. Sounds pretty communal, tolerant, and friendly - beavers are good people! (find it at 8:19 - where the narrator wonders whether or not the beavers know if the muskrats are there. Right next to the beaver. In a tiny space. Sheesh - of course the beavers know they’re there!)
Wild stallion rescues a filly in raging water! Forest Service Volunteer Becky Standridge watched and took photos as a group of wild horses went for a swim in an Arizona creek. One of them, a young filly, went too deep and got into trouble. So Champ, the stallion, went to her rescue.
“People think horses don’t have a soul, but the soul of a horse is much bigger than man knows.”
Yes Becky, horses definitely have souls! (and everyone who reads this blog thinks so too!)

This is a photo of the lichen they eat under UV light. It’s quite beautiful and other-worldly, right? Imagine what the Arctic must look like to reindeer! Maybe that’s how they find Santa Claus…
